It's up for debate, but this has to be the most influential Hip Hop song of all time, Big Bank Hank passed away earlier today. But this song isn't going anywhere. All I ask, is that if you haven't heard it before, listen to it.

All of it.
Some will say that they ripped off the true innovators, but they were the first ones to bring it to the mainstream, and that's definitely worth something.

They really brought rap to life, everybody who listens to rap should know this song. It's an amazing song, and has been my favorite song for years. It never gets old.

The other day I was in the store and Rapture by Blondie came on the muzak. I found myself humming along, when I looked up and saw another man my age (47) and I said, "I had forgotten just how terrible this song is." We had a chuckle, and I continued by saying that there's no doubting its importance in the history/development of pop music, but after 34 years it just doesn't hold up. I feel the same way about Rapper's Delight. I remember when it was all over the radio, and we memorized the words as best we could. We were starting to turn the corner from disco, rap was seminal, and this song was something the mainstream audience had never heard before. (You can hear the effects of the beginnings of rap in Rapture . Hence the name?) The influence of Rapper's Delight, and Rapture, on pop music was huge. But after all these years, I really don't think it holds up. But I still remember most of the words.

Hate to say it, but it does sound a bit outdated now. I still listen to it all time though, and know the majority of the words.

I put it on my ipod mix of tunes to play for my kids in the van. They love it!

Awesome! Always good to see the younger crowd getting into it.
